    noun: Pilates

    1. a system of exercises using special apparatus, designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, and posture, and enhance mental awareness.

    1930s: named after the German physical fitness specialist Joseph Pilates (1880–1967), who devised the system.

    1. Pilates is a journey into self-awareness, becoming familiar with your body, and giving you the confidence to approach your body in a new way. All other benefits are down-stream from this journey of self-awareness.

  • Pilates is a process of discovering and correcting your disfunctional/painful movement patterns so that strength and mobility can be attained.

  • Unlike Club Pilates, Pilates by Johanna is a boutique studio. That means you either work with me in a private or small group setting(max 4). You can expect ample attention to detail and constant feedback, rather than struggling in a large-group setting. 

  • While muscle toning and functionality are benefits of all exercise, Pilates focuses on the local core muscles, and by strengthening and finding balance in those muscles, you will find yourself with less aches and pains as you move throughout your daily life. 

  • Joseph Pilates built his philosophy based on a myriad of functional systems, including yoga. The differences can be found in the training aspect of Pilates, using resistance workout equipment to do the movements.

  • The result of increased body awareness will come in your first few sessions. Physical results can be addressed on a client-client basis and usually take a few months to see big differences, depending on the desired result. 

  • Have a goal, show up consistently, and trust the process. Pilates also often brings up years of dysfunctional habits, so giving yourself grace through the process is also massively important.

Johanna's Journey

Pilates came into my life as a gift.  It made me value movement and the body, my body, in new and healing ways.  In the 25 years since, I've gained the knowledge and experience that has empowered me to keep myself and others feeling and performing with ease and vitality.  I teach the method of Pilates because I know how transformative it can be to EVERY body.

My studio is where clients come with the purpose of healing and improving their lives inside their bodies.
